Is YOUR Metabolism in Check?
Have you stopped seeing results?
People fail at body change because we don't understand metabolism. There is a reason 95% of dieters regain the weight and 66% end up even heavier.
There has been a lot of discussion about metabolism, how to increase it and if yours is out of whack. Firstly, let's address the questions of what even is your metabolism and why should you care?
Your metabolism is the process by which your body converts food to energy. During this biochemical process, the calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.
To be clear, your metabolism is your own. Become a metabolism detective of your own body. If you are stuck in the continual cycle of eating less and exercising more, you may need to change it up. Your metabolism changes based on your menstrual cycle alone so we can't be stuck in the same approach day after day.
Today, we are going to go over my three laws of metabolism. These are useful because it condenses a lot of information into three simple things.
1. The Law of Metabolic Flexibility.
The metabolism is adaptive, reactive and efficient. Push on it one direction, it pushes you the opposite direction. This is why when you under eat and over exercise, you can experience hunger, unpredictable energy, cravings and reduced metabolic output. You don't want a fast metabolism, you want a flexible metabolism. Work with your metabolism by playing with different metabolic states. (EMEL); eat less, exercise more, (EMEL); eat more, exercise less (ELEL); eat less, exercise less. (EMEM); eat more, exercise more.
2. The Law of Metabolic Individuality.
Each person is unique in their physiology, psychology and personal preferences. A healthy lifestyle must be matched to the individual instead of the individual trying to mold themselves to the lifestyle. YOUR perfect plan is not found, but rather created. Stop studying books, podcasts, research and start studying yourself. Absorb what is useful, discard what is not and add what is uniquely your own.
3. The Law of Psychic Energy Drain.
Willpower is not an infinite resource, but can be be drained and charged like a battery. Things that drain willpower: self-editing, low blood sugar, stress, self-criticism, sleep deprivation, dieting and over-exercising.
Things that charge willpower: balanced blood sugar, sleep, meditation, creative pursuits, relaxing music, massages, connection and meaning/purpose. Live a "rest-based lifestyle" where stress management, recovery and relaxation are prioritized. Life is busy, I get it. But this makes a HUGE difference. It takes practice.
